I came accross this story a week ago and just had to share it. It begun in January this year with a very expensive engagement diamond ring, a restaurant, a toilet and a plumber. I’m sure you get where we’re going with this.
An excert from the MSNBC website:
It took a plumber to retrieve a woman’s 7-carat diamond ring after city workers failed in efforts to flush the gem out of the pipes of a restaurant toilet. The $78,000 engagement ring fell from Allison Berry’s hand when she flushed the toilet in the restroom of The Black Bear Diner on Jan. 14. The ring plopped in and the water whisked it away, said Elena Castelar, the restaurant’s shift manager.
Roberts guided a tiny video camera into the pipe with an infrared light attached. He eventually spotted the ring just 3 feet down and 5 feet over from where it was flushed. Then it took an hour-and-a-half of jackhammering and pipe removal before Roberts and a technician could recover the ring, eight hours after it fell in the toilet.
“They always say diamonds are a girl’s best friend. In this case, a plumber is a girl’s best friend,”
Roberts said. “She was just so excited, she had tears in her eyes. She gave us a hug and said ‘Thank you so much.’”
So, a lesson to be learnt here I think, if your going to wear very expensive dimoands, make sure you get the correct size setting, and whatever you do, be careful in public washrooms.

Much folklore has been written about the Hope Diamond, one of the most famous loose diamonds in the world.
The story goes something like this, according to legend, the Hope Diamond originally decorated the forehead of an Indian idol. Measuring over 45 carats, the gem was unmistakable for its blue-steel coloring. The loose diamond was stolen by Hindu priest, the intention was never known. The poor priest, upon being caught in possession (a famous 45 carat diamond is not easy to pass off) he was arrested, tortured and executed for the crime. The Hope diamond was never returned to its original place and since then every owner has befallen tragedy.
The Hope Diamond, also known as “The Remarkable Gem” is believed to carry this deadly curse imbued upon every owner. After the priest death, the next recorded event took place in France in 1642. Whilst in the ownership of a French trader and smuggler called Jean Babtiste Tefernier tragedy was visited upon him.
After reaping a sizable profit from its sale, he then allowed his son to spend and waste most of the money. While later traveling to India try and recoup some money Tefernier was attacked by a pack of rabid dogs died.
There are many more gruesome stories about one of the most famous loose diamonds, but for now lets just marvel at its loose diamond beauty.
